Mission and History
Mission
The Carruth Center is a non-profit, outpatient pediatric therapy clinic located on the grounds of The Parish School. Our mission is to provide child-centered, developmentally appropriate and impactful therapy services to children and their families through collaboration, meaningful connections and quality interventions. Some of our clients attend The Parish School and come to us for additional individual or group services, however many of our clients do not attend the Parish school and come from the Houston community at large.
History
Established in 1996 and originally known as The Diagnostic Treatment and Training Center, our facility was established to provide a primary resource for identifying and meeting the needs of children with communication and learning differences, their families, and the professionals with whom the families work.
In 2000, we were renamed The Carruth Center, in tribute to the patronage of Ethel G. Carruth and her family, who have continued to generously support the Parish School and Carruth Center to this day.
In 2009, The Carruth Center established an ongoing relationship with Nancy Kaufman, expert in Childhood Apraxia of Speech, to consult with clients and mentor SLPs. This relationship continues today as Nancy provides this along with parent education seminars annually. In addition, in 2021, The Carruth Center conducted research into the efficacy of the Kaufman-Speech to Language Protocol in partnership with NY Medical School and the Speech Research Centre. Results of this study have been presented nationally and will soon be published.
In 2019 The Carruth Center took over the management of The Parish School’s Social Learning groups and camps. These programs are administered by The Carruth Center through ongoing guidance from Renee Attaway Storer who presents nationally for Social Thinking™.
Today, The Carruth Center offers a full array of pediatric assessment and individual and group therapeutic services, as well as many options for summer services. We offer a collaborative framework to inform the family, a child’s education team, and any outside professionals of helpful interventions for their child.
