Carruth Corner – November 2024

November 6, 2024

The Carruth Center has had a very busy October! In the spring of 2021, we began the process of participating in a research project in conjunction with New York Medical School and the University of Toronto regarding the efficacy of the Kaufman-Speech to Language Protocol. After years of preparation, data gathering and collaboration, that research was published in October! Five children from our 2022 Kaufman-Apraxia Boot Camp were the subjects of the research, and the outcomes were remarkable! We hope this research will inspire other studies of the Kaufman-Speech to Language Protocol and generate more research in treatment for childhood apraxia of speech in general. Huge thanks to the families who participated as well as the Carruth Center clinicians who took part: Brittney Fertak, Taylor Kopycinksi, Wendy Wiseman, Caroline Moreland and Kate Wasserman. And of course a huge thank you and congratulations to Nancy Kaufman!  The full research article can be found here: Effectiveness of the Kaufman Speech to Language Protocol for Children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech and Comorbidities when Delivered in a Dyadic and Group Format. In addition Dr. Aravind Namasivayam, Nancy Kaufman and myself were invited to speak on the Apraxia Foundation’s podcast about the research which can be found on Apple or Spotify.

For years, The Carruth Center’s music therapist, Kate Wasserman, has been writing songs to help children with everyday tasks. The Parish School teachers and Carruth Center staff have always asked Kate for an album of songs that we can incorporate into the classroom or therapy sessions. Kate’s knowledge of the neuroscience of music perception and her years of experience working with neurodivergent children yield songs that are at a slower pace, repetitious and regulating. If you need a break from Ms. Rachel, we encourage you to check out Kate’s songs! Kids Songs for Therapy, School and Home.

The Parish School and The Carruth Center will be holding a canned food drive next week, Monday, November 11th – Wednesday, November 13th.  All donations will benefit the Houston Food Bank.  If you would like to participate, please drop off your canned goods in the box in the Carruth Center lobby.

Wishing everyone a great November and a happy Thanksgiving! The Carruth Center will be closed the week of Thanksgiving as well as two weeks during the December holidays. Please reach out to us if you have any questions about our services or need information.
