Carruth Corner – December 2024

December 17, 2024

Happy Holidays from The Carruth Center! It has been so fun seeing the children excited about the upcoming holiday break!

In November, we welcomed back Susan Honey to the team! Susan is a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) who took a hiatus to complete her graduate degree in OT and her clinical rotations. Susan returns to us ready to take her boards to become a registered Occupational Therapist. Congratulations to Susan on this hard-earned achievement!

In January, we begin enrollment for our summer camps. The Carruth Center offers three on-site camps and one sleep away camp every summer. If you would like to find out more about these camps, as well as the very popular Camp Acorn on The Parish School campus, please attend the hybrid Camp 101 presentation on January 16th at 9:00 AM to find out more here. Camp Acorn applications go live on January 21st, and all Carruth Center camp applications go live on January 28th. Links to all applications can be found on our websites. Parish and Carruth camps fill quickly! Please reach out to me with any questions you may have about our various camp options.

In January, we are also thrilled host a virtual parent ed by Nancy Kaufman! Nancy is a leader in the world of Speech-Language Pathology and has developed a widely adopted methodology, The Kaufman Speech to Language Protocol, for the treatment of Childhood Apraxia of Speech. Nancy resides and practices in Michigan, but she offers ongoing mentorship for our Carruth Center SLPs. Nancy will present a parent education seminar “Childhood Apraxia of Speech: Top 10 Tips to Empower Parents” on January 15, 2025, at 6:00 pm. You can register for the event here. This event’s target audience is parents of children with apraxia or severe articulation disorders. Nancy’s visit occurs just before enrollment opens for our very popular Kaufman-Apraxia Boot Camp which occurs in July. This camp was the basis for the research article recently published in the American Journal of Speech Language Pathology demonstrating the effectiveness of the Kaufman-Speech to Language Protocol. We are excited and proud to have added to the supporting evidence needed in the area of the treatment of Childhood Apraxia of Speech!

Please note the Carruth Center will be closed from December 23, 2024 – January 2, 2025, for winter break. We will re-open on January 6, 2025. Wishing you and your families a peaceful and happy holiday season!
