Carruth Corner – January 2024

January 23, 2024
Camp registration at The Carruth Center and The Parish School is open!  Our camps provide a place where your children’s needs are supported while interacting with peers and having fun.  We look forward to our Carruth camps every year.  It gives us an opportunity to break our school-year routine and it gives our clients new experiences to practice their skills. Camps fill early so please apply as soon as you are interested!
Camp Acorn is an on-campus camp during the month of June.  Camp Acorn offers a Language Program for those children needing language intervention, but also offers a sibling camp so parents can bring all their children to campus to enjoy camp at one location.  Those children who enjoy more outdoor escapades can enroll in Camp Acorn’s Adventure Play option. Both of these camps offer early morning drop-off and afternoon enrichment activities.
Camp SOCIAL is a sleep-away camp at Camp for All in July for children ages 8 – 16.  Younger campers learn perspective taking, and practice flexible thinking and understanding hidden social rules.  Teens are supported while they navigate changing social rules as peer relationships pivot, and conversational topics become more mature. Camp SOCIAL embraces the Social Thinking methodology and campers attend daily social group lessons. If your child/teen sometimes misses the nuances involved in understanding and forming friendships, this camp may be for you!  We thank the Hamill Foundation for once again generously underwriting camp SOCIAL!!
The Kaufman-Apraxia Boot Camp is an on-site, 3-week camp in July for children ages 3 – 6 with Childhood Apraxia of Speech or significant Articulation Disorders. This is a popular program that children from all around the country have attended! The children engage in therapy utilizing the Kaufman-Speech to Language Protocol with SLPs who have been trained and mentored by Nancy Kaufman. Parents will receive a detailed report at the end of camp along with videos of the SLPs working with their children. Parents also get to attend camp on Thursdays to see their campers in action!
Camp SuperWriters makes handwriting and fine motor skills fun!  Children attend camp on-site for one hour per day for 8 days in a 2-week period while practicing beginning writing skills or fine-tuning their current writing skills. This camp is for 5-8-year-olds though there are times when campers a little younger or older are accepted. Younger campers will target uppercase letters and older campers will target lower case letters and sentence formation. Campers will work in dyad or small groups and scheduling is based on camper availability, age and need.
Summer Social Club uses Social Learning strategies while completing theme-based activities together. This group is 1 ½ hours long once a week and occurs when the Camp Acorn day is done (12:00) or when afternoon enrichment activities are over (3:00). This year’s themes are Builders (construction) and Makers (arts, crafts and cooking). The campers work on fun group projects while navigating all the social challenges that occur naturally occur in group work.
Here is a summary of Carruth Center camp ages, dates and cost. Camp Acorn details can be found on the Parish School website.
Summer is an exciting time on campus! We hope you can find a program that meets your child’s interests and needs. If you have questions about any of our programs, please feel free to contact me directly.
