Carruth Corner – January-February 2025

January 29, 2025

Registration for Carruth Center summer camps is open! Links to all applications can be found on our website and below. If you are interested in a camp, we encourage you to apply right away as we have already had many applicants and spots are filling fast!

Camp SOCIAL is a sleep-away camp at Camp for All in Burton, TX serving children ages 8 – 16 who are having difficulties understanding social cues and with interpreting and using the hidden rules of communication. All new applicants will have a screening with Camp Director Renee Attaway Storer.

Kaufman-Apraxia Boot Camp is a three-week, intensive intervention program for children ages 3 – 6 with childhood apraxia of speech or severe phonological speech disorders. All applicants will have a consultation with one of the K-ABC SLPs. This is the camp our recent research published in the American Journal of Speech Language Pathology is based upon.

Camp Superwriters is for children ages 4 – 9 who are having difficulty with handwriting skills. This group meets eight times over two weeks and places children with a partner to practice handwriting work during fun, multi-sensory activities.

Summer Social Club  gives children ages 5 – 8 an opportunity to practice their social language skills outside of the classroom while the children complete fun group projects like cooking, building or gaming activities. This group meets once per week for an hour and a half in June.

In addition to our camps launching, we also want to introduce you to the newest member of The Carruth Center team! Laurie Stempien is a Play Therapist who has joined the Carruth Center on a part-time basis. Laurie comes to us with an incredibly solid foundation of skills in counseling and helping children and adults, as well as a diverse work background including working with the Coast Guard! Laurie is building her caseload now. If you are interested in Play Therapy for your child, please give me a call and I can lead you through the process of getting started.
