May is National Speech-Language-Hearing Month and Mental Health Awareness Month which gives me the opportunity to highlight two of our amazing disciplines within our staff!
We are so fortunate to have our dedicated and skilled team of speech-language pathologists here. A long time ago, one of my supervisors said to me, “there are no bad days in speech therapy.” This has stuck with me throughout my career. No matter what is going on in my day or how behind on administrative tasks I am, when I sit down with a child this is their time, and their time is precious! From my first day at The Carruth Center, it was obvious that this mentality was part of the culture here. In every session, I get to observe I see the SLPs analyzing what their clients are doing in order to help them make incremental changes towards their goals. They are coordinating with parents, teachers and other professionals in the client’s life to learn all they can to best serve the children. Professional development is a priority here and the speech team has been eager to learn and grow. The speech staff here is one of the most dedicated I have worked with and I thank them and celebrate them! So if you see Taylor, Brittney, Jenn, Andra, Megan, Courtney, Wendy, Nicole, Dawn or Virginia this month, please give them a high five or hug and let them know how they are impacting your child’s life!
Our Carruth Center mental health team consists of our play therapists. I have learned so much about mental health in children through Haley and Laurie! They create safe places for children where the pressure is off and help children express the feelings they may not yet have the words for. This precious and nuanced work can be tricky as little people have big emotions and are a part of multiple systems that may be impacting their emotions. I have been in situations where their insight and guidance have made all the difference in how we approach a child or how others understand a child. Although play is their work, it is not easy work, and they both manage to do it with incredible grace. If you have Haley or Laurie in your life, please let them know how their care has impacted your child!
Carruth Center summer schedules begin the week of May 31st. We hope to see you this summer!!
