It is hard to believe summer is over! We had an incredibly eventful summer! Our Camp Director, Renee Attaway Storer and her incredible Camp SOCIAL counselors, took 60 children to Camp for All in July. Camp started the day hurricane Beryl made landfall! The kids experienced a normal rainy camp day and got to do all their regular camp activities. Thank you to all the families that extended their trust in us to keep their kids safe while the storm blew through. It sounds like the kids had a much better time at camp than many of us did in Houston that week! A huge thank you to the Hamill Foundation for their generous underwriting of this camp!!
In July we wrapped up our Summer Social Club, Camp SuperWriters and Kaufman-Apraxia Boot Camp. We found out in late July that the research we completed during the 2022 Kaufman-Apraxia Boot Camp has been approved to be published in the American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology. I want to thank the families who participated in the research and the Carruth team from that year for their work and dedication to this project. Thank you, Brittney Fertak, Taylor Kopycinski, Wendy Wiseman, Kate Wasserman and Caroline Moreland, for helping put The Carruth Center in the American Speech-Language Hearing Association’s evidence base! Thank you also to Dr. Aravind Namasivayam and Dr. Vikas Grover for their partnership in this effort, and of course a huge thank you to Nancy Kaufman!
As we enter the new school year, I want to take a moment to address parking lot safety. For the safety and security of your children, belongings and vehicles we ask that you do not drop off or pick up your child directly in front of the building. This blocks incoming traffic and blocks site lines in front of your vehicle. Instead, please park your car in a Carruth Center parking spot and either come to our lobby or your therapist will pick up your child from the car. If you choose to come into the building, please take your belongings with you and lock your vehicle, even if you are coming in for a brief moment. Please do not leave children in the car unattended or your car running. Lastly, please be mindful of others around you when in the parking lot. There are times during the day when the parking lot is very busy and it is easy for parents to become distracted. Please stay alert to avoid accidents and injuries during these extra busy times.
Our therapy teams will be working on fall schedules during the next few weeks. This is a challenge for all of us. We ask for your patience and flexibility as we work through this process and look forward to the predictability the school year brings.
Thank you for trusting The Carruth Center for your child’s needs. Please reach out to me at any time with any questions or concerns.
