Carruth Corner – March 2025

March 4, 2025

Until I began at The Carruth Center, Music Therapy was a bit of a mystery to me. Sure, music is great and can affect your mood and outlook, but what does a music therapist really do? And what is a neurological music therapist, which is the distinction our music therapist Kate Wasserman has?

Over the years, I have watched Kate work with our clients, and I have grown so appreciative of her skills and the application of music to address a variety of difficulties due to a client’s overriding diagnoses. Kate is able to approach therapy with scientific knowledge of the effects music has on the brain. I have found music therapy to be a wonderful addition to a child’s therapy plan as it can support a huge spectrum of underlying difficulties a child may be experiencing in areas such as sensory processing, learning, cognition, motor skills and planning, speech and language, and emotional processing and regulation. By using music, she is able to target areas where a child may be struggling in a way that is supportive, intrinsic and neuroaccepting. March is Music Therapy Month! If you are interested in learning more about music therapy, please reach out to us or to Kate directly.

We are getting close to all of our camps for the summer being full. There are still a few spots available in Summer Social Club and Camp Superwriters. Camp SOCIAL is able to take a few more campers to Camp for All, but spots only remain in certain age and gender groups. Applications to all of The Carruth Center camps can be found here: Carruth Center Summer Programs. If you are interested in your child attending Camp Acorn on campus during the month of June, information and an application can be found here: Camp Acorn.

Please reach out to me anytime to find out more information about our summer programs, or any of the therapies or group programs The Carruth Center Offers.
